DFDuck's #AmiWest98 IRC Conference Logs 11-Jul-98

This is my complete log. Unaltered other than editing out my private messages, reformatting of text to make it readable (ever try reading an AmIRC log?), and adding html tags top and bottom. I missed the beginning of both days. I started logging at 1:15pm the 11th and 10:26am the 12th. If anyone has those times logged I would really appreciate a copy of them.

          |version 9 now
spuug |Cluster: I wish I was there, but this is the best I can do. :')
Cluster |feh, this sucks. Windows uses the highest portions of RAM
          |*first*. If your ram is bigger than the cacheable area, the
          |non-cached ram gets used first. That sucks.
Cluster |yet another shining example of brilliant software

spuug |Arvid: putting cameras and such up?
Cluster |spuug: If for example, on a 430TX chipset motherboard you have
          |512kb L2 cache, and you have more than 64Mb of RAM, then anything
          |above 64Mb cannot be cached
Arvid |spuug: cameras, GPS, even audio devices and scientific
          |experiments by grade school and high school students
Arvid |spuug: and the occasional simplex repeater
spuug |Arvid: oh! I know what that's like -- I'm doing win95

Cluster |spuug: I have 64Mb of SDRAM in this VX-Pro motherboard, so I
          |can't really go above that. I'd have to get a new MB
jakobX |cluster: dont use an intel chipset then
spuug |Cluster: that's just one incredibly broken machine architecture.
jakobX |cluster: and noncached memory isnt a big performance hit anyway

          |grab more virtual ram just for the hell of it. My brother has
          |128Mb in his P-II machine, and virtual mem is still used a lot
Cluster |jakobx: it is a hit
Cluster |jakobx: compare the average latency of 40ns for SDRAM, and 6ns to

jakobX |cluster: only a couple of percent
Arvid |spuug: the GPS's which we fly are all Motorola, with no altitude
          |limit. They do have a 999 knot speed limit
_bladez_ |cl: doesn't windoze95 suffer a performance managing memory above
          |64MB?

          |See your system crawwwl

_bladez_ |spuug: and windoze has no means to be able to constantly keep
